“LSVT BIG” is a special form of Physical and Occupational Therapy (PT and OT) and Rehabilitation that was developed specifically to address the unique movement impairments for people with Parkinson’s disease (PD).
The name is derived from the “Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT)” that is used for treatments of speech disorders associated with PD. LSVT BIG is a research-based exercise approach that was developed based on principles from LSVT for speech (called LSVT LOUD). At Associated Neurologists, LSVT BIG sessions take place with our therapists Cynthia Bahr, PT, and Kim Downs, OT, certified LSVT BIG-clinicians.
Evidence has shown that people with PD who are following LSVT treatment have improved ratings on tests of motor functioning, including:
- Improved amplitude of trunk rotation and gait
- Faster walking speed with bigger steps
- Increased speed of arm movements
- Improved balance
- Improved motor coordination
- Enhanced overall quality of life
It is important to note that the LSVT BIG protocol is intensive, with multiple repetitions of core movements used in activities of daily level. This intensity and type of practice is necessary for optimal learning and application of improved movement.
The protocol includes 16 sessions over the course of a month for 4 one-hour sessions per week. Though LSVT BIG can be used with patients at most stages of PD, assessment with our LSVT BIG-certified clinicians is critical in determining whether this standardized treatment protocol is indeed right for you.
The LSVT BIG Program is covered by insurance.
